I have seen benchtop presses with as much as 0.015 inches of wobble right from the box. That is enough to make a 1/4 inch drill bit cut 1/32 inch oversized.

To test runout, you need a dial indicator with a magnetic base. Mount the indicator so the plunger touches the smooth part of the chuck body or a precision dowel held in the chuck. Rotate the spindle by hand and watch the needle. A runout of 0.003 inches or less is acceptable for most woodworking tasks. Anything above 0.005 inches means you should check the chuck installation or consider returning the press. I always do this test before I even plug the machine in. I once spent an afternoon chasing a wobble that turned out to be a single speck of finish residue on the taper. The fix was simple: wipe the taper with a clean rag and mineral spirits, then push the chuck back on with a firm twist.

Another mistake is hammering the chuck onto the taper. You should only use the spindle wedge that came with the press to remove the chuck, never a hammer. To reinstall, clean both surfaces, line up the keyway if present, and hand-press the chuck upward until it seats.
